How to manage the log files to listen to specific daemons ?

I took a read in Syslogd manual pages but it didn't fit me.
Im useing Slackware 9.0.0 with offcourse, syslogd.
What i want to do is the following, i would like to have a /var/log/ftp for the pure-ftpd daemon, a /var/log/sshd for the sshd daemon and stuff...
for what i've read in the manual pages, this stuff is recorded in the kern facilitie, so i cant separate the daemons... there is a facilittie called daemon, but didn't help me out to.
I'm also interested in other logging daemons, maybe syslogd is obsolete ?
