For the last time, I don't have MPlayer installed!

Ok, I tried running Xine as root and I can play the only WMV file that I have on my machine. This also works as a normal user. However, if I try to play something from the web, using the plugin for Mozilla (although, this is for gxine), I still get errors about cook.so.6.0 and drv4.so.6.0.

did you try installing the "all" codecs? either that or maybe try to just upack it and copy over the missing file(s).

Yes and it works now, because I got the codec pack called "all" and not just the "essential" ones.

Just in case this is useful to anyone:-

I was trying to listen to the BBC by clicking on "Listen to World Service" on www.bbc.co.uk/radio/i. Xine would come up and complain "Error loading library cook.so.6.0".

I found "cook.so" in /usr/local/lib/codecs (using "find"). So I set up a soft link (as root) "ln -s cook.so cook.so.6.0". Then I went into File>Preferences>Decoder in Xine and set real_codecs_path to /usr/local/lib/codecs. (This required File>Preferences>Gui to have experience_level set to something other than beginner.)

Finally I closed Xine and restarted it by clicking on "Listen to World Service" again. It worked.
