I installed tor from synaptic and my IP is shown on line when I go to places like - http://torstatus.blutmagie.de/index....dwidth&SO=Desc
I installed it from it's website and it is the same.
There is something that I am missing when I install Tor.

If you want to use tor in firefox, you also need to install privoxy
http://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-doc-unix.html.en

Does it say you are using tor?
Take a look at /var/log/tor/log

I got Tor and privoxy installed on the machine and torbutton on my FF.
Fire fox popped a window teling "Torbutton on Firefox 3 is known to leak your timezone and livemaks via tor." and asking if I want to continue.
I did continued to find that the link http://torstatus.blutmagie.de/index....dwidth&SO=Desc tells me that I am not connected to Tor.
I could not found my way with configuration of Tor, it look too much of a Geek for me.
any simple way to make it work?

You need to start tor
/etc/init.d/tor start.
look in /var/log/tor/log for errormessages
Do you use a firewall?

I would suggest to go to

http://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-doc-unix.html.en

and do the installation step by step

I tried with no firewall and it did not work, the Firefox had more problems.

Reading some thing on Open Source and free software I found TORPARK

and it working with WINE.

Thanks
