Question How to make a parallel repository (e.g. with CVS)

Often, I hack on some code which originate from a CVS repository. I do this on my two desktop boxes. For the usual reasons, and because I never know which box I'll be using next, I would like to have my code changes stored in a (e.g. CVS) repository (on my server box). In other words, I want to be able to update from the global, public repository and to commit and update from a local repository.

One way to do this would be to write a (perl) script to handle my changes via. patches. So a update from the local repository would be executed as
1) For each file, determine the current version (say. 1.4) and the version to update to (say 1.6)
2) create a patch that does the right thing, e.g. would update the current version to 1.6.
3) Apply the patch.

So the local repository would really contain patches, not the real files.

But this is rather basic stuff. I'm_sure somebody else have already done most or all of this. Can anyone point me to an appropriate project?
