How to know which version of XWindows I am running?

I just tried to install a video driver and failed because I have the wrong version of XFree86 installed. I would like to upgrade but don't know (1) what version I have and (2) where to get the new bits.

I am running Fedora and get auto-updates of all my software. But nothing has updated recently ... hmm ....

Are you running an older Fedora. XFree86 has been replaced by Xorg. You should either upgrade X windows to Xorg, or upgrade to a newer Fedora.
