How to install yum on CentOS 5.5 _64

Hi there,

I'm pretty new to linux admin, but have just bought some server space (VPS) which runs on CentOS 5.5.

I want to install pdftk. I have checked in /usr/bin and pdftk is in there and the system says it doesn't recognise te pdftk command anyway.

Which flailing about trying to get this done, I found out that the yum command does not work. I get:

Code:
yum: command not found
I've tried:

Code:
which yum
and get:

Code:
/usr/bin/which: no yum in (/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/root/bin)
I've also tried:

Code:
locate yum
and get:

Code:
locate: can not open `/var/lib/mlocate/mlocate.db': No such file or directory
When I use my control panel (Plesk Power Panel) and search to see what software is installed, I see that something called 'yum-metadata-parser' is installed.

I'd be really grateful for some advice on how I can install yum, and also want to know generally if I have to 'build' a package once int's installed.

Many thanks in advance

Joe

Well, on my system, its /usr/bin/yum, and its usually part of the default std install, so the only thing I can suggest is ask your hosting company. Maybe they've built a custom install for some reason.

Cheers Chris. I got in touch with the hosting company and they showed me how to install it. Now I can just do the 'yum install whatever' command which is so good. Thanks for you help.
