How to Install Tally & PayRoll Software in Linux Environment
Dear All,
I am trying to install client version of Tally 9 on my new Ubuntu 11.10 machine. I have Tally 9 Server edition running on Win XP. & other Tally client user are accessing it (Win XP machines).
To install Tally.exe on Ubuntu I used Wine Software. during installation it asked for some Tally Server directory. Now I am struck as I don't know how to assign that directory here (Server Directory is on remote machine). screenshot is attached with this mail...
Do I need Samba Service (as its cross platform - Win XP Server & Ubuntu Client) otherwise how will I give the path for a remote machine...
One of my Friend is a Windows Admin. & he has only Windows O/s in his office. Now they are planning to migrate to Linux. Tally & PayRoll Software is already configured in Network (Windows Environment). He asked me to test it first at home & then he'll plan the migration. Problem is that, I got struck... I need some help here...
Samba is the standard to use for networking between windows and Linux. I have no idea if this will work with the software you refer to or through wine on Ubuntu. Is the plan to have the server with the Tally software on windows and the clients on Ubuntu?
OK, I don't know if I can, but I'll *try* to help - what OS is the Server Directory machine running?
(this particular thing interests me too, because I can make money doing this... )
The highest rating Tally (if that is an accounting software from India) got on the Wine AppDB is "Silver", mostly it is rated as "Garbage". This means that it will hardly work with Wine and not in any case reliable enough to use it for an enterprise environment.
If you want to migrate to Linux I would recommend to either ask the developers for a Linux version or to find a similar software that runs native on Linux. If both is not possible then stick with Windows. It is still the best environment for running Windows software.
If your friend plans to switch to Linux, it might be a good idea to search online for open source/linux payroll software. Doing that brought up a number of sites referring to the software at the link below. I've never used it so can't offer any opinion on it:
The Tally Server is running on Win 2003 Server & at this moment they have windows clients (60-70 nos.), but they are going for expansion & planning to add some 50-55 more users (that means 50-55 O/s & office license). to avoid the financial implications the management is asking for some other alternative & i suggested to this guy to go for linux...
I got no idea howz tally in Indian market, but anyway, i'll try for other accounting software that is compatible to linux. the only problem is that the user will ask for training on this new s/w, if they are migrating from tally to this new one...
I forwarded him all the replys n solutions i got here, told him to check that open source s/w. let me see what he's gonna do. meanwhile, thanks to all of u for your time n support.
I have installed Ubuntu 13.04 and from the software center installed "Wine" and "CROSS OVER software Trail version" and installed the Tally ERP 9 with its windows install.exe file.
It installed well and you can work with it.
As this is a trail version you have to get registered for utilizing its full potential. if you satisfied your self with trail version you can buy the product from their web site "codeweavers.com" and get registered the product.
With this software you can run any windows programs old or new versions. For more information you can visit the above mentioned link.
