How to install something (anything) under RH9.0

I am trying to get some experience in Linux, Red Hat seems to be as good as any from what I have read, so I installed it. Looks good. I know a few SCO Unix commands, mainly the stuff I have to know here at work. But as to the basics of everything else, I am new.

I am curious, if I have a program that I would like to install (Linux based of course), how do I go about doing so?

Check out this thread on installing from source. If you have a file in the rpm(RedHat Package Management) format you can do as root:

rpm -ivh packagename.rpm

and on the other hand, if u want to upgrade a package u already hav, just give the command
rpm -Uvh <packagename>
if u feel tat those rpm names r too long to type, just type the initial few alphabets n press TAB. u'll see the full name of the file taken automatically by tux.
