i would almost want to lean to saying blame it on the geforce2 MX. i have a severe hatred for those cards from a nasty past with games not running right.

but let someone else give you the RIGHT answer.

sancho's kinda right- the built in support for nvidia isn't great. but nvidia's got great linux drivers for download at their site. if you can manage a text install, then you can install the nvidia drivers, which will run much better than the ones provided by the install.

If you're at a login screen you may already have linux installed on your system... Did you supply any password for the root user during your setup?

I just had to get that off my chest.

You can try using linuxconf to add a user other than root. You can use xconfigurator to set up your XFree window environment.

ah yes, the moment of truth. your first time looking at a real command prompt, an infinite number of choices of what to do with your newly installed linux system. Think of the power of the operating system, the itching you have to get started.. doing what... i dunno. I remember thinking that, and not knowing WHERE to get started.
If I could offer some advice here - and something that worked very well for me... DON'T KICK IT RIGHT INTO THE GUI!!!
If you want to really appreciate what your Linux system can do for you, and you really want to learn how to use it, stick with the command prompt for a while. the default shell in Linux is BASH - you will probably hear that term a lot. It is the ugly command prompt you find yourself at, kind of like DOS, but not such an insult.
Spend some time learning the commands that will help you navigate the filesystem, create users, files, directories, etc; modify and edit the text files on your system. Learn how to use the man pages and install RPMs and programs from the BASH shell. If you spend time using the command prompt (which is what a Unix system really boils down to in the long run, text files and a command prompt) then you will really start to understand things before you use a GUI. Linux will not be as powerful if you try using graphical utilities to do all of your work.
Now that I've put that spiel out there, I don't have anywhere to reference you. I'm sure there are plenty of references on the web (maybe search for "BASH commands" at Google)? But I'll leave that to someone else to recommend. Myself, I have a nice "complete reference" to Linux on paperback - IOW, a good fat book on Linux would be a great place to start.

Just had to put my .02 in here. I have at least 3(2 Geforece 2MX , 1 TNT2) Nvidia cards that are running Linux and I never had any problems with them, installation or otheriwse. I think the default support for nvidia cards is getting to be pretty good with the newer dists.
