Hi! Although I'm a "Newbie/Noob" here (so I don't really 'represent' LQ) and I'm NOT at all familiar with all this,
I wanted to say that: you are a GREAT contribution to LQ (&thus to the whole internet via searches)!
Your detailed success/solutions are superb!

I try to contribute by answering older threads with no reply, if I have some ideas that may be useful. (I hope that taking them out of zero-reply status doesn't deter a more useful reply from noticing the thread.)

I saw a note about: "for the M1 you need to create the Pi user and groups manually"
EDIT: ooops, I got the works/doesn't backwards, sorry, so this probably isn't relevant.
After more thought, I realized that it's *possible* that: whatever the Node.js install error/problem is, it *might* not be unique to NanoPi NEO, so that leaves just a search for:
node*js install error|problem [|ETC], which needs more details.

This site seems to have tons of Node.js info:

One general tip/thought: this question (if not already solved) might get more response if it had lots more specific details,
both about the error message, and scenario for reproducing it.
Maybe some 'trace/info' tools (shell -xv or {s,l}trace hwinfo/inxi ETC) could shed light on what goes wrong where.

Anyway, I 'hope this helps'; best wishes always. And a big THANKS for all your contributions!
