Question how to install netscape

Hi, I'm very new at linux so please help me.

I just installed Mandrake Linux 9.0 and trying to install netscape on it.

I downloaded netscape and extract it to a folder. When I click on the install icon, it'll go through all the normal stuff, then stop when it try to creat a folder in the ./usr/local/ folder.

it'll say " Error[-624]: can't make destination directory.

it seems like i have to log in as a administrator in order to install anything, but i'm the only user on this system.

if i have to log in as a admin, how do i do it?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, you have to install as root. If you are logged in as a user, you can use the "su" command to do things as root.

Kevin - As Hendikins said, using the "su" command will give you the same privs as root. You'll be prompted to enter the root password, and then you should be able to perform the Netscape insallation. (Note that anytime you are logged in as root, the prompt will switch to a # instead of the the standard $) At the risk of telling you something you already know, you generally should always run as a typical user rather than root, since root always has all privileges, and can do anything without restriction. In other the words, it's very easy to damage your system by inadvertently executing the wrong command as root. Use root sparingly.

In any case welcome to LQ and the amazing world of Linux -- J.W.
