Is the file you downloaded on the internet an rpm? If not, you need to install the libgcj rpm for Fedora Core 3.

You need to install the libgcj rpm and all other rpms that are dependencies of libgcj. Extracting individual files from an rpm and placing it somewhere on your system won't necessarily resolve your problem because libgcj.so.5 won't work properly without other files from the libgcj rpm.
