Cool How to install java ?


I badly need java to be installed in my new ubuntu version , when googled it told me to do the belowed way

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-jdk sun-java6-plugin


but its taking too much time , former version of ubuntu like 7.10 didnt take too much long , is there any other options to install j2sdk , or jre

You can download the packages from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp and install them manually, also apt-get is the preferred method on Ubuntu.

If you choose to manually install Java then there are instructions on the site for installation.

Hi,
There isn't any reason that the install should take longer than it previously did as the size of the java packages has not increased in any way that would be called noticeable. If it really is taking much longer, then you may be connected to a mirror that is having some difficulties; this has happened to me as well on a few occasions. If so, just pick a different mirror.
By the way, I do not recommend installing the software provided directly by Sun. It is the same software but it does not integrate as well with the rest of the system as the packages from the repository (not that this is impossible to achieve the same degree of integration if you use the bin installer, it will just require some additional tweaking and editing on your part).
