how to install gnome from kde in opensuse
I am trying to install GNOME from KDE in SUSE 10.1.
I searched the forums, and all are mentioning this can be done by checking gnome-desktop in Yast2>software management>left side filter choice pattern>left side. But when I did this I just couldn't find that checkbox. In fact there are only two checkboxs in the Desktop section: Minimal Graphical Install and KDE, I cannot find the gnome-desktop there.
Could you please advise how can I install GNOME then?

If I search gnome a lot of files are list on right panel, and most of them are checked in the checkbox.

Hi, thanks, but I got the following output when run zypper:
# zypper install gnome-desktop
Restoring system sources...
Parsing metadata for 20090408-093408...
Parsing metadata for SUSE LINUX 10.1...
Parsing RPM database...
package 'gnome-desktop' not found
Summary:
Nothing to do.
Can you show me what's wrong?

Is it possible to upgrade 10.1 to 11.1 w/o losing my private data /applications? If yes how? I've already have a DVD image of SUSE11.1 in my local drive.
BTW, I thought I was using OpenSUSE but it is SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop. The DVD images I have is called openSUSE-11.1-DVD-i586.iso.
Sorry for the mistake.

Looks like Gnome is allready installed. You want to use the Gnome desktop enviroment?
When u log out of Kde and get to the login screen, what options do you have at the bottom of the screen?
There should be one labeled "session". Click on it and choose gnome, then login as normal.
Hope it helps

Personally I am not found of upgrading , but in general you can.
From opensuse 10.1 to 10.2 to 10.3 to 11.0 to 11.1
You;re private data as long as they are stored in /home and you do not format /home you can keep it
Of course it is a very good idea to back up it first
Applications you loose them .
Each version of a distro is different
