how to install gnome?

I have come across an extremely slimmed down live-cd (Finnix), and it has a great how to remaster it, and I am currently doing so . I was wondering what steps I need to take to install gnome, currently there is no x windows system, like i said its very slimmed down. It is based off of debian so it has apt-get which I would prefer to use. I tried this once a long time ago based of stuff I found on google, and things didnt go well so I was looking for some beforehand suggestions. thanks

I did that and now I get the following after "startx"

xauth: creating new authority file /root/ .serverauth.18774
xauth: creating new authority file /root/ .Xauthority
xauth: creating new authority file /root/ .Xauthority

X: cannot stat /etc/X11/X (No such file or directory), aborting.
giving up.
xinit:Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
Xinit:No such proces (errno 3): Server error.

It looks like apt-get didn't install the X window system. I haven't used Debian for a while. Looking at their web site it seems that they are still using XFree86. You could try installing that as follows.

apt-get install xfree86

You might also check to see if your APT sources list file includes the Debian web site. I'm not sure that it should, given that your distribution is a spin off of Debian. All the same you could try entering this line in your /etc/apt/sources.list file.

deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib

I got that from a Debian system partition that I no longer use but it is still applicable to the current Debian system. That line was highlighted and copied so any spaces in the line are presumably correct.

Failing all of that you could just install Debian. You can keep it lean yourself by simply being careful regarding what you install.
