How to install Gimp 2.6 or older in Lubuntu 14.04 ?
O.K., I'm done with this thread. If I could, I would delete it but....seems that can't be done. I could continue to answer/argue that yes, I did try Antix, that no, Lubuntu LTS 14.04 is not an old shit and is supported until April 2019 and this and that...
That laptop is a "spare/back-up". I will put it back in the mothballs today and maybe I will NEVER touch it agian. I have another one running Windows 7 that works just fine. The spare one with Linux/Lubuntu works just fine with Gimp too...except that the last 8 or 9 tool's icons dont show but... they are there and when you hover over them, their name appears and you know exactly what you got. I can live with that... if I EVER have to use it again.
I would have known it was such a pain in the ass to install a new program of my choice in Linux, I would never have ask the question. In Windows, it's such a breeze to do just that. Thanks to all that did participate.
If you already have Gimp 2.6 downloaded on your system than just cd to the directory that the package is in and use the dpkg -i <name of pkg> command with elevated privileges to install it.
As you already know the current stable version of Gimp is 2.8.
Looking in the repo's and the Gimp website I couldn't find Gimp 2.6.
You can try this but you should think about it first before doing so.
Air on the side of caution as it could make a mess of your Lubuntu install.
I did try 4-5 different ways to install Gimp 2.6 (not 2.8) but all the command prompt I have been able to find aren't working.
Hi...
Which commands and methods did you try?
I found some tarballs of 2.6.xx here, in case you weant to try that route. I also found 2.6.12 in a .deb package here, which might be easier, however, either way, you most likely will run into dependency issues which may or may not be resolved, as 2.6 was last offered on Ubuntu 12.04 (as far as supported version go.)
Let us know how it goes.
Regards...

Hi! Idon't have Gimp 2.6 right now. I was stuck with 2.8 but did remove it right now. I went to Google and did search for installing GIMP 2.6 in Ubuntu. There was a few threads about this and some (most likely one) were really simple but out of the 4 steps, the first 2 command prompt wouldn't work. http://namakutux.blogspot.com/2014/0...untu-1404.html
I did find this one too (same thread you did propose) but what does one do with that ? ftp://ftp.mirrorservice.org/sites/ft...pub/gimp/v2.6/
Yesterday, my access to the Internet was really bad so I couldn't finish my search but it seems that installing a portable Ubuntu compatible Gimp 2.6 ( or even 2.4) on a thumb drive would be the easiest solution.
Don't know why this doesn't work ? http://namakutux.blogspot.com/2014/0...untu-1404.html
I guess it's just for Windows ?
This seems interesting but...I can't figure it out how to do it
appimage.org
That one is the most complicated http://askubuntu.com/questions/24386...ck-to-gimp-2-6

Hi...
Did you install gedit? If not, that's probably why the second command didn't work. Lubuntu does not include gedit by default. For the first, can you post the error you received when you tried it?
Hi Lesl2, sadly I don't think downgrading from Gimp 2.8 to Gimp 2.6 will solve the underlying problem with your unsupported graphics card, as you described in your other discussion: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-a-4175600377/
I agree with hydrurga's suggestion to swap to a Linux-friendly graphics card, if at all possible.

That's what I get with the first one:
mv: cannot stat ‘/etc/apt/sources.list’: No such file or directory
"it's still not going to solve the problem with your SIS video driver."
You know what...3 days ago I had Gimp 2.8 on this laptop and it was working just fine ( no tearing) with ""that graphic card"" so... The problem...to have that, I was running Linux Lite 1.0.8 and my screen resolution wasn't right. Only Lubuntu 14.04 provide me with my native resolution 1280 X 800.

To get rid of the fact the tool box in Gimp 2.8 is not opening completely. The last 4-6 icons aren't showing...they are covered by a zebra like pattern.
but maybe it works?
take your time, read and type carefully.
it is really well-described
(but warnings are still in place)

and do you know for a fact that reverting to 2.6 will fix the problem?
A better idea: You can find every version of gimp every released, as well as detailed and accurate installation instructions, from a safe and trusted source, namely, the developer's site at gimp.org:

I don't know if it would fix the problem. Maybe 2.4 or even 2.2 would be better? Again, 3 days ago I had Gimp 2.8 working correctly on this laptop with this graphic card but...it was with Linux Lite 1.0.8 which wasn't providing me with my native resolution 1280 X 800.
I won't try complicated recipe as I don't know much about that stuff. I'm with Linux for a big 2 weeks so I just barely discovered how command promt work...but barely.
