how can i install the codecs for xine or kaffeine? i have downloaded the latest codec pack with those windows codecs (.dll files) but i dont know how to install it.
first you will want to untar the contents of the codec pakage that you downloaded
this will create a folder with all of the codecs inside
you will want to create a folder called win32 in your /usr/lib folder
this would create a folder called /usr/lib/win32
open up the win32 folder that you created and copy all of the codecs from the folder that was created when you untar'd your codec package to this folder
so now all of the codecs that you got from the folder that was created when you untar'd your codec package should now be in /usr/lib/win32
typically most of these programs will look for the codecs in the /usr/lib/win32 folder
if the programs you are running can't find them simply right click> go to preferences > go to the codec tab and enable link to codecs as /usr/lib/win32
yes i did that already but till now, i'm not able to play my wmv videos because there's an error message that shows that i have no "Video Codec: MS WMV 8 (Win32)(WMV2)" and it asks on a popup "start playback anyway?" when i click yes, its only the sound playing not the video. i know that i have a WMV 8 codec installed in my /usr/lib/win32 folder but xine doesnt recognize it. what would i do?
i would download all of the latest codec packages. i like to download all of them and then untar them. then i would copy all of these codecs to your /usr/lib/win32 folder. if it ask you if you want to overwrite some of the codecs in this folder click yes. this will ensure that you have the latest and greatest.
i use both mplayer and xine to play windows media just fine but i built everything from source. having the updated codecs should help you.
personally, I would just rebuild using the rpms from http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/ . The binaries just work, and they are updated from CVS everyday. There is an rpm for the codecs here as well.
