How to install Chromium 58 manually, or, how to find the launcher in the extracted folder

Hello,

I'm on Ubuntu 10.04 and would like to use Chromium 58, last version using GTK 2 (please don't ask me why I don't want to upgrade, etc. ... long story)

I've downloaded and extracted chromium-58.0.3029.81. I can't figure out how to install the thing. The original diwnloaded file was chromium-58.0.3029.110.tar.xz

Here's what's in the main folder:
Code:
user@user-laptop:~/Downloads/chromium-58.0.3029.81$ ls
android_webview chrome DEPS jingle PRESUBMIT.py styleguide
apps chromecast device LICENSE PRESUBMIT_test_mocks.py testing
ash chrome_elf docs LICENSE.chromium_os PRESUBMIT_test.py third_party
AUTHORS chromeos extensions mash printing tools
base cloud_print gin media remoting ui
blink CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md google_apis mojo rlz url
breakpad codereview.settings google_update native_client sandbox v8
build components gpu native_client_sdk sdch WATCHLISTS
BUILD.gn content headless net services
build_overrides courgette infra OWNERS skia
buildtools crypto ios pdf sql
cc dbus ipc ppapi storage
user@user-laptop:~/Downloads/chromium-58.0.3029.81$
I cannot install using apt-get. My version of Ubuntu no longer allows it.

Many thanks,

RM

Hi,

You do know that you're running an old distro and you should update it for security reasons.
Dunno if chromium-58 can even run on it.
Anyway, if you want to try to run the application, go into the directory created after extracting the archive and run:
Code:
./chrome
Cheers

Many thanks, Bathory, for your reply.

Regarding your first point, "old distro," "security," see this post.

Chrome v58 should work because it is the last version of Chrome which uses GTK 2. I did the same with firefox and am using Firefox on Ubuntu 10.04 on my old Netbook as I write these words. For more info on this, see this post.

Regarding your suggestion, in my extracted folder, "chrome" is a folder (see last lines of the following):
Code:
user@user-laptop:~/Downloads/chromium-58.0.3029.81$ ls
android_webview chrome DEPS jingle PRESUBMIT.py styleguide
apps chromecast device LICENSE PRESUBMIT_test_mocks.py testing
ash chrome_elf docs LICENSE.chromium_os PRESUBMIT_test.py third_party
AUTHORS chromeos extensions mash printing tools
base cloud_print gin media remoting ui
blink CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md google_apis mojo rlz url
breakpad codereview.settings google_update native_client sandbox v8
build components gpu native_client_sdk sdch WATCHLISTS
BUILD.gn content headless net services
build_overrides courgette infra OWNERS skia
buildtools crypto ios pdf sql
cc dbus ipc ppapi storage
user@user-laptop:~/Downloads/chromium-58.0.3029.81$ ./chrome
bash: ./chrome: is a directory
user@user-laptop:~/Downloads/chromium-58.0.3029.81$
Thank you nevertheless for your efforts.

Okay. I figured something out...
It seems that the last version of Google Chrome that works on Ubuntu 10.04 is v25.
I installed it with dpkg -i google-chrome-etc.deb.
A pity no later versions will work.
If anybody knows of a modern browser which would work on my OS (Ubuntu 10.04),please let me know.

New locks on an old $HOME? You may be waiting awhile. I suggest you download an LTS of something,
and then consider your backup strategy, while you "wait". Seriously. EOL?
You'll receive plenty of feedback, but I dare say none of it encouraging. Upgrade to an LTS. Stay There.
Sooner or later, it is just a toaster. It may make great toast, but it will never do bagels.

Good Day!

Yeah, I agree, and am working on it here!

Meanwhile, while I wait, I am able to write to you at this very moment and still enjoying my old 10.04, my favourite OS ever! If you want the whole story, click here!
