How to install ArcGis 9 program from DVD

I am trying to install a program called ArcGis 9, from a DVD.

The bios is set to boot 1st from a DVD/CD

The 1st folder I see = ArcGis-Linux. This has the following listing:

/media/ESRI/ArcGIS-Linux/ArcGISEngine-931-UL-filelist.htm
/media/ESRI/ArcGIS-Linux/ArcGISServer-931-UL-filelist.htm
/media/ESRI/ArcGIS-Linux/ArcReader-931-UL-filelist.htm
/media/ESRI/ArcGIS-Linux/EngSDK-931-UL-filelist.htm
/media/ESRI/ArcGIS-Linux/gis931-engine-linux.tar
/media/ESRI/ArcGIS-Linux/gis931-engsdkcpp-linux.tar
/media/ESRI/ArcGIS-Linux/gis931-engsdkjava-linux.tar
/media/ESRI/ArcGIS-Linux/gis931-reader-linux.tar
/media/ESRI/ArcGIS-Linux/gis931-server-linux.tar
/media/ESRI/ArcGIS-Linux/Install931.htm
/media/ESRI/ArcGIS-Linux/PatchFinder
/media/ESRI/ArcGIS-Linux/Whats_New_in_ArcGIS_931.pdf

My question is almost embarassing but I don't want to bollox up my system and have to spend time to right it.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

well given there's a webpage called "install931" I'd personally actually read it.

Hello Chris,
I did do that but am still unsure of what to do next. This is a new installation. I do not have ArcGis on my machine.
Following, the content of the file "install 931":

  <h4>Installation Notes</h4>
<ul>
  <p>It is important to keep  all versions of ArcGIS products installed on
    the same machine in sync to avoid any software conflicts.<br>
    <br>
    To find out what products are currently installed on your machine, download
    the <a href="PatchFinder93.exe">PatchFinder93.exe</a> utility
    and run it from your local machine. This utility provides a report detailing
    which ArcGIS products are currently installed on your machine. This will help
    determine which product Updates you should install on your machine.
    The report also details which service packs have been installed. The report
    is displayed when the utility is run and a servicepack.txt log file is created
    in your temp folder. The Update Finder utility searches for the following
    ArcGIS products.<br>
  </p>

  <ul>
      <p>ArcGIS ArcReader<br>
        ArcGIS Desktop (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo) <em>Includes the ArcReader fixes for the ArcReader FEATURE</em>.<br>
        ArcGIS Desktop Developer Kit for the Microsoft .NET Framework, VB6, VBA and Visual C++<br>
        ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit for C++, the Java Platform, the Microsoft .NET Framework, VB6 and Visual C++<br>

        ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework<br>
        ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform<br>
        ArcGIS Server Web ADF Runtime for the Microsoft .NET Framework<br>
        ArcIMS<br>
        ArcIMS Web ADF for the Microsoft .NET Framework<br>
        ArcIMS Web ADF for the Java Platform<br>
                ArcSDE
      </p>
  </ul>
  <br>
  <p><b>NOTE (ArcIMS and ArcSDE users):</b> If you use ArcIMS 9.3 or ArcSDE 9.3,
    you must also install ArcIMS
    9.3.1 Update  or ArcSDE
    9.3.1 Update . For example, if you use ArcIMS 9.3 and ArcGIS 9.3
    Desktop, install both ArcIMS 9.3.1 Update and ArcGIS 9.3 Desktop Update 1. Since ArcIMS 9.3, ArcSDE 9.3 and the ArcGIS 9.3 products share common
    DLLs, it is important to keep the software release versions in sync to avoid
    any software conflicts.</p>
  <p><b>NOTE (ArcGIS Desktop 9.3 users):</b> <SPAN class=095093317-06042007>The ArcGIS Desktop Help updates setup (ArcGISDesktopHelp931.msp) includes updates for ArcGIS 9.3 Desktop Documentation, including Help files, core extension Help files, and tutorials.  <strong>The ArcGIS Desktop setup (ArcGISDesktop931.msp) must be applied before the ArcGIS Desktop Help update</strong></SPAN>.</p>
  <p><b>NOTE (ArcGIS Desktop 9.3 Evaluation Edition users):</b> This Update is
    supported with the ArcGIS Desktop 9.3 Evaluation Edition.</p>
    <p><strong>NOTE (ArcGIS Server Post Install): </strong>The ArcGIS Server Post Install will automatically launch after the
        update has been applied. If this doesn't happen, please be sure to launch the GIS Server Post Install and Web
        Applications Post Install (if ArcGIS Server .NET is installed) manually from the shortcuts found in your Start menu.
        The GIS Server Post Install will prompt for the ArcGIS Server Object Manager (SOM), ArcGIS Server Object Container (SOC),
        the GIS Server Manager (on ArcGIS Server Java) and the GIS Server Webservices (on ArcGIS Server .NET) user accounts and
        their associated passwords. To avoid disrupting the operation of your server installation you will need to use the exact
        same accounts and passwords that you used when you initially installed ArcGIS Server (or the last time you ran the
        Post Install). If you don't remember which ones you used you can have the Post Install create new ones for you, but
        you will need to update the permissions on your data and non-default output server directories to grant access to the
        new ArcGIS Server Object Container (SOC) account. Additionally, if you previously had large caches associated with
        cached Map or Globe services it may take a very long time for the Server Post Install to alter the permissions on the
        large number of files in your caches (see <a href="http://support.esri.com/index.cfm?fa=knowledgebase.techarticles.articleShow&d=32766"target=”new”>Technical Article 32766</a> for a suggested workaround).
        For help on getting started after installing ArcGIS Server, refer to the Administering the server--&gt;
        Getting started after install topic in <a href="http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisserver/9.3/dotNet/"target=”new”>
        ArcGIS Server Help</a>.</p>
    <!---  <p><strong>NOTE: </strong>If you are using ArcSDE data sources, you must apply the <a href="http://support.esri.com/index.cfm?fa=downloads.patchesServicePacks.viewPatch&PID=66&MetaID=1352#install-ncUNIX">ArcSDE
    9.3 SP 4 client install</a> for your particular platform. Since the ArcGIS
    9.3 products share common DLLs, it is important to keep the software release
    versions in sync to avoid any software conflicts. </p> --->
  <!---        <p><b>NOTE (ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .Net Framework users): </b></p>
    <p>The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .Net Framework setup has an Update setup named ArcGISServerDotNet931.msp.
        The 9.3 release also includes a setup for the Web Application Developer Framework (ADF) Runtime. This Runtime installation
        is installed on production machines where you plan to deploy Web Mapping Applications built with the Manager or the Web
        ADF. The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .Net Framework Web ADF Runtime setup has an Update setup named
        ArcGISServerWebADFRuntime931.msp. You would only need to run the ArcGISServerWebADFRuntime931.msp if you had run the
        separate Web ADF Runtime install when you installed 9.3 Final. <br>
        <br>
        A machine that has the ArcGISServerDotNet931.msp installed would not require an installation of the
        ArcGISServerWebADFRuntime931.msp.

there are VERY clear instructions in that file. read it again. I'm not going to translate it for you, it looks pretty straightforward.

drmjh 12-06-2012 07:35 AM

Why do you bother answering at all ?
Matthew

acid_kewpie 12-06-2012 08:57 AM

Dude, just read the instructions, there's written there in english. What else are we supposed to say? If you're having trouble understanding the htm file, you do know you're meant to read it in a web browser, right?

drmjh 12-06-2012 10:02 AM

To Dude one from Dude two:
No, I did not know that it was necessary to open this file in a browser. Having done so however, it is apparent that I cannot use this disk to install ArcGis9.
In spite of a snarky answer, the post was inadvertantly helpful.
The Dude two.

you ARE aware that ArcGis 10.1 is current
just grab it from the web site
http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgis-for-desktop
and see the support page
http://support.esri.com/en/
( you DO need to BUY it first )

Are you planning on incorporating it with some other imaging software
Like ( USGS/NASA) ISIS3 and or ( NASA/Ames) Stereo-pipeline

BUT
unless YOU MUST 100% MUST use the old ArcGis9

look into GRASS
http://grass.osgeo.org/
it IS in most distros Repos

John V V,
Many thanks for the heads up. I wasn't aware of that. I have passed the news on to my wife. She volunteers for ECO here in the Mts. of North Carolina and wants a program to be able to access & work with the voluminous Geo. data out there.
