What program do you want to install?
How to install it depends on what format the package is,ie.,RPM, tar.gz.
Need more info.

to install an rpm, at a prompt as root type:

rpm -i [rpmpackage.rpm]

to install an .tar.gz, at a prompt as root type:

tar -xzvf [gzipped_tarball.tar.gz]
cd <directory created by gzipped-tarball>
./configure
make
make install

to uninstall something from a .tar.gz, enter the directory created by the tarball and type:

make clean

to uninstall an rpm, type:

rpm -e [rpmpackage.rpm]

Kpackage is what you would use for RPMs .Plenty of info on that in KDE help files.
Nice explanation of RPM and tar.gz installation,Matthew.
