How to install a printer?

I have just installed slackware 9.1 with kde for a first time. My problem is that I do not know how to get my printer(hp deskjet 656c(USB) ) work. What I must do? How can I install it?

as root:
cd /usr/share/apsfilter/
./SETUP
run through it, when it asks for a driver I recommend gimp print, the second one, ijs driver, #5

then cycle through find your printer and configure everythign else

apsfilter is great. I use it for my hpdeskjet 694c on slack

You should use cups. Install it (use apt-get if you have Debian) and then Use it's http server to access it. I forget the port that is uses but i'm sure that there are those who would be nice enough to mention it.

wow. To be blunt.

I am gonna be blunt cause quite frankly I am laughing my @$$ off:

He obviously does not use Debian ;-) (not meant to be offensive)

cups uses an http server? the only time I dabbled w/ cups (4 years ago) it made me mad and I gave up, I then spent 5 min w/ aps filter that used lpd w/ the gimp print driver and got wonderful prints from all my programs w/o special settings.

Cups is obviously nice for someone to puch it so hard, but for a first time SLACK user that wants simple prints perhapse the built-in apsfilter/lpd/gimp-print is the best choice, but be sure to look at both, don't go with what one person says/claims/demands. go with whatever works best for you.

(but as a fellow slack user I peacefully recommend apsfilter)

i just tried setting up my printer with apsfilter (hpdeskjet656c), it prints test page fine but when i do lpc reread i get this, Printer 'printer@localhost' - cannot open connection - No such file or directory
Make sure the remote host supports the LPD protocol. how do i fix?

I use cups for my printer (a HP deskjet690c on a windows 2000 server wih lpd printing installed) and get the exact same problem. so anyhelp would be very helpful and by the way the port for cups is 631 so the address http://localhost:631

tried cups and everything worked fine. Just had to make sure to select use cups in print system.
