How to get X working on a VMWARE 4.0 Build 5592 with Debian Installed

I have been trying for quiet a few days now but dont seem to be able to get X working for a Debian Woody 3.0 installation on VMWARE workstation.
I have been told that a good way of going about this is to install knoppix and then just upgrade/update it so that u have the latest versio of debian running. Are there any negative aspects in doing such a thing.
Any help would be appreciated.
