how to get vlc-0.9.0_beta3 to save webcam stream to file

i am using gentoo ~amd64, linux-, and vlc-0,9.0_beta3. how does one go about saving a stream from my webcam to a file? i followed the "streaming how to" exactly and all i get is the following error "qt4 error: save not implemented". does vlc-0.9.0_beta3 have this capability??
