How to get rid of transparency?

Yes - I don't know what I'm doing and I am too lazy to RTFM.
Somebody knows how to get rid of the shadow and the transparency for the pointer with xfree 4.2.99rc4?
It's driving me crazy.

either:

a) find the /somethinginvolvingX11R6/icons/default/index.theme and set that to inherits=default (i think that's the one. looking at it it might resurse.... try just setting inherits=none or something)

b) set "Xcursor.theme=none" in ~/.Xdefaults

actually i only find info on how to make it look prrtty, not stop it, so io'm just assuming that setting an invalid entry (i.e. there is no cursor called "none") should work....

Thanks acid - I'll check it out as soon as I get that @#$^ partition to boot again.
