It's stupidly amazing how i found out Friday afternoon, that that is precisely what was going wrong. the PC I was using had a bad CD-Rom. as for all the other advice, i might just bookmark this thread as it seems to have opened a wealth of knowledge for me.

Yeah, the 'successful' installs I had occasionally, sent me down the wrong path for a while grrr.
