How to find Versions
 

How to find Versions of: freetype,glibc,gcc,pango,esound,make,audiofile,gtk,msfonts,xorg etc:confused: .
I also want to know how to upgrade these things from older versions to available newer ones.

For gcc, you can just do "gcc -v" in a terminal. However, your distribution's package manager should have a feature that allows you to see what's installed, along with the version numbers. Upgrading is usually easiest done through said package manager, too. What distro are you using?

Updates are different on most distributions. What distro do you run?

I installed Linux in my system today and i dont know anything abt Linux. I dont even know wat is distro. Can u plz help me????????

A distro is the name of the Linux distribution you are usig e.g. Fedora, Suse, Ubuntu etc.

Distro that i m using is Red Hat Linux 9.0

The packages in Redhat 9.0 are very old and there really is no point in trying to upgrade essential packages like glibc, gcc, gtk etc, because you will end up with lots of dependency problems.You could be better off just getting yourself a copy of the latest Fedora Core.

ok. Can u plz let me know what are all these packages meant for ? I want just an intro. I googled a lot but i am not getting any useful information. How can we find package's version i.e. -v option is not working for all commands.
