How to find Versions of: freetype, glibc, gcc, pango, esound, make, audiofile, gtk, msfonts, xorg etc:confused: .

For gcc, you can just do "gcc -v" in a terminal. However, your distribution's package manager should have a feature that allows you to see what's installed, along with the version numbers. Upgrading is usually easiest done through said package manager, too. What distro are you using?

Updates are different on most distributions. What distro do you run?

The packages in Redhat 9.0 are very old and there really is no point in trying to upgrade essential packages like glibc, gcc, gtk etc, because you will end up with lots of dependency problems. You could be better off just getting yourself a copy of the latest Fedora Core.
