What gentoo files do you mean?

Gentoo packages everything as either bzip2 tars or gzip tars. All you need it is tar and the gzip and bunzip2 programs to extract things.

Example
tar -xjvf blah.tar.bz2
tar -xzvf blah.tgz
tar -xzvr blah.tar.gz

i've had similar things happen and usually it's that you used IE to download it. IE can't handle two dots in a filename 'cause it's crap. so try renaming it to 'ntop-3.1-gentoo.tar.gz' and open it again.
