How To Enable Dialup in XP Guest in Ubuntu 7.10 Host

Since I have XP as guest in my ubuntu 7.10 host, how can I enable dialup in XP as guest? How can I do this?

I've tried to enable dialup in ubuntu host, but it doesn't seem to connect.

it may be hardware related....maybe you have a linmodem?

please provide all specs such as ...how connected eg com1 port or usb....or internal
hint most internals are linmodems aka windows only modems

but as you are using xp....that is not an issue...but I use virtualbox and AFAIK you have not named your emulating software.

then there is the small matter of your firewall.

aus9, to answer your questions, I have virtualbox as my emulating software with ubuntu 7.10 as host and xp as guest. Last week, I managed to get dialup in ubuntu using a non-free software from either linmodem.org or linuxant.org. The software they provided is limited to 14 Kbps whereas their licensed version runs full speed at 56 Kbps. Do you know of any way I can get around to paying the licensed version? Any way I can hack into the software to increase the speed?

Also, is it still possible to create dialup in xp as guest? Below is aditional info about my computer:

This suggests you have a Conexant modem, drivers can be found at Linuxant.com, hit the "drivers" tab.
Normally during the installation or unpacking of the linuxant source there will be a file created called licence or similar with all the relevant information regarding your computer, you send a copy of this file along with a small amount of cash and you will then get the maximum speed your ISP provides with that modem and that computer for any Linux installation.

Junior Hacker, no kidding?? Wow!!! You're so smart!! If you had bothered to take a look at my last post, you would have noticed that your reply is the same as my post. Go back to my last post, read it, then answer the question.

I was born in May so I think you may be a little unkind.

I hope that is not seem rude but let me repeat....if XP is a vm under a linux host....xp has the drivers or you can obtain them easy enough for your windows only modem.....so please do so.

when you boot up the xp....install windows drivers to run a windows modem....get it?

What Junior Hacker was hoping you might do is....run the windows only modem under linux and you just file share.

2) What I don't know because I have ethernet....is whether your xp guest can get out of a linux firewall.....I have tested a linux guest getting out of a linux host using an emualated ethernet....but that is not going to help you.....so the only way is for you to listen to my advice and accept or reject it....as you see fit

taurusx5 06-03-2008 12:25 PM

aus9, i also was born in may and your point? you're mistaking rudeness for justification. i dont see know why you are defending someone who didn't bother to take a look at my last post. and just to be clear, i'm not being rude. however you see it, that's on you.

anyway, since i have xp as guest, youre saying that i should install the modem driver in xp. how do i go about doing that? when i turn xp on and check device manager, there's no device for modem listed, other than the wireless modem. so where do i go from there? so, should i insert the xp disc in my computer and boot up and install the driver that way, or what?

ok so in vbox lets call the name of your vm....xp....click on xp....click on settings and then click on serial ports

I do not have xp....and I do not have your modem so I am guessing the next bit ok?

check the box enable serial port and select com1 (normally) and this may require more than one attempt as I do not know what you used when you running xp.....it will be easier for you if you knew what com port irq you used so try the defaults and take it from there

then allow xp to start but before you click into the vm....click on devices and click on your serial port....xp should....if the settings are right....detect new hardware and then you load the windows driver that you can get off most windows driver sites.

I repeat the driver will work in xp vm because it is a real driver for xp......it won't work without some fiddle in linux but you are not on linux

try that...

if you succeed pls post how you did it to help others ....good luck

Sorry if you seem offended, but when I reply to a question, I may also be dropping information for other readers whom may come accross this thread via a search engine etc.
Don't be so quick to come to a conclusion when someone comes to your aide or to the aide of future information seekers that stumble accross this thread based on the title.

OH!
By the way, what does the quote below suggest exactly?

aus9, thanks for replying. I did what you had asked by going into settings in Vbox and enabling serial port, com1, etc. However, xp doesn't detect my modem. When I start up xp and go into device manager, I don't see 'serial port' listed among the devices. All I see is 'network adapters,' under which I don't see my modem. All I see is my wireless modem. What should I do now?
