how to edit xfce menu?
Hey guys, I know how to edit the xfce menu from the settings manager, but the list between settings and help on the menu where all of the application launchers are at I cannot figure out how to edit.

In the menu editor there is simply green text that says include and the command is listed as system. I'm guessing this has nothing to do with xfce itself it's a system menu stored somewhere that all desktop environments use? So my question is, how do I edit this?

edit: I know I could edit the .xml file directly, I was hoping there was a way that wasn't a complete pain in the ass to do though.

Hey i had the same damn problem pissing me off all day and no one seemed to be able to answer me or they think i'm an idiot for not figuring it out myself anyway this is what i did.

I followed the instructions at but all that did was show the other menu items in the menu editor but they were attached to empty duplicate folders in the menu and i still couldn't edit the ones that were actually being used so i ditched that method.

The default .xml that the menu editor seemed to be loading was /home/possum/.config/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml so what i did was rename the original menu.xml to menu.xml.original and replaced it with the /home/possum/.cache/xfce4/desktop/menu-cache--home-possum-.config-xfce4-desktop-menu.xml.xml which i had seen in the xfce wiki instructions and renamed it menu.xml.

So i can now edit my menu items in the menu editor but for some reason when i install new applications the shortcuts dont automatically appear in the menu and i have no idea why.

I spent a whole day trying to figure this out and its such a damn simple concept to edit a damn menu . I'm not an idiot i just very new to linux and having trouble learning some things. If anyone can please tell me how to do this easier and why it behaves this way it would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Possum.Vashti

Well I've been trying to figure this out for almost a year now and I don't think there is a more simple way. It's just something the xfce team decided not to give a shit about.

I just dont understand whats happening with the menu xml files. Using the default one it adds my new programs automatically but using another xml file that makes it possible to edit the menu and it doesn't. There must be some simple reason why they made it complicated. damnit lol.

I installed a program in slackware12, Xfce4.4.2, and its startup icon went into the Subfolder of another Program? How do I edit xfce menu? was the subject title for my post when I did the similar search and found this post. I tried using the launcher
with a /usr/share/icon.png and the launcher info from the /usr/share/application desktop launcher and I get a permission denied error ( ...

First creating your own thread ( and then tacking the same question onto another thread is considered crossposting as well. Please don't do that.

Why all the negativity towards the XFCE team and others? If the efforts of unpaid volunteers is not up to your standards, then how about offering to help them? If you even know how to READ an XML file, you're well on your way to being as smart as they are.

Sorry about the cross posting, lots of times you are told to start your own thread. Anyway I sure do appreciate the volunteer labor of open source developers, but don't know how to read config or xml files. My config files look like Russian, German and some English. Any ideas on how you learn to read such files: config and xml files? I would much rather fix and develop applications than scouring tid bits on the net and asking out here for help, although there are a few decent folks out here.
