You might learn as much about this 'metalink' stuff from reading about it and perhaps downloading a metalink client, as you would if someone familiar with it comes by and explains it.
I'm not familiar with it myself, but the mirror service used for your SuSE downloads is provided by MirrorBrain, and if you go to their page, scroll halfway down ( this page:
http://mirrorbrain.org/features/ ) to read about metalink generation. There is an embedded link there, which takes you to the actual metalinker site ( link:
http://metalinker.org/ ) where you read about the technology, and apparently you can download a metalink client, presumably for use with the meta files you are considering. I figure complete instructions would come with that client application.
