How to do usrquota without a /home partition

I want to use disk quota for my /home directory, but many articles on this subject based on that there is a /home directory in the fstab file. But the fstab file on my machine is like this:
"
LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2

none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/sda2 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0
"

I added a totally new line
"LABEL=/home /home ext3 defaults, usrquota 1 2"

But it did not work and the server even halted.

How can I do disk quota without a /home partition?

thanks for your help.

/home needs to be a partition of its own for disk quotas to work. You can shrink your / partition and then create a new partition. Mount it as /home1 and then copy contents of /home to /home1. Then unmount /home1, rename /home to say /home2, make a directory /home, edit fstab to add a mount of the new partition to /home. Mount /home.

Hope this helps.
