The idea that always missing is the regex engine that the tool use.
Sed AWK or Grep if you notice there is a slight difference between them.
The BRE engine
The ERE engine
This article discusses the Linux regex
BRE patterns like this:

$ echo "Testing regex using sed" | sed -n '/regex/p'
$ echo "Testing regex using awk" | awk '/regex/{print $0}'
ERE engine like this:
$ echo "tet" | awk '/tes?t/{print $0}'
$ echo "test" | awk '/tes?t/{print $0}'
