how to detect a key press from a keyboard


hello,
how do you detect a key press from a keyboard so if no-one types anything in an hour for example you shut the pc down with init 0.

I know from a terminal you can monitor key strokes with xev, but I'm not sure if X interacts the same way. Maybe key-mon?
