How to datadump?

I'm looking to dump dvds to my hardrive, but do not know how? I asked a linux guru I know and he said to "dd if=/dev/cdrom of=dvdname.iso",
but when I do that I get this error:

dd: reading `/dev/cdrom': Input/output error
370576+0 records in
370576+0 records out

Is this because of the write protection on dvds or am I doing something wrong? Thanks for your time in reading this.

370576 records appears to be dvd-sized. Did you check the iso file?

presuming you were able to mount the dvd, were you also able to mount the iso image?
