Is this a usb flash drive or a SD card from a camera or phone or other similar device?
If a SD card you need a memory reader. Typically the cards are formatted as FAT which should be automaticaly recognized and mounted. You can access the pictures from your file browser. It is also possible the card is formated as exFAT which might require a driver to be loaded.
If your trying to down load files directly from a device then it depends on its make/model.
If I'm guessing right that you're talking about a flash memory card (SD or other format) from a camera (since you're talking about pictures), then michaelk's answer above has the information you need. I'm also assuming your computer has the required slot to read the memory card, otherwise a simple USB adapter (card reader as mentioned by michaelk) will do the trick.
In reality, it's a simple file copy operation and not "downloading", in the traditional sense of the word.

if your media is on a stick or card, plug it in to your computer, open a file manager then find that drive that has been assigned to it, then copy paste it to where you want it to go, or cut and paste if you want to clear your card.
If it is in the camera still firewire port is most likely needed with a cable rated for the device.
