How to create /dev/usb?
I know this must be a simple problem to fix, but I can't find the answer...
How do I create a /dev/usb?
I've enabled the USB subsystem in kernel 2.6.16-gentoo, including /dev/hiddev (which I need for a USB X10 controller), but neither "usb" nor "hiddev" are present under /dev.
I thought they would be created automatically when I enabled the proper items in the kernel, but this did not happen. Am I missing some other config parameter which prevents these devices from being created?
Can someone please offer some adivce? Thanks!

Why do you think /dev/usb should exist? What's the problem, what does not work?

Post the article link that you are using to setup this. Are you sure you are not after say /proc something.
Normally you use the mknod command to make block devices. Does it say what options to create the /dev/usb/**** device? Look at this on the other. http://www.apcupsd.org/manual/USB_Configuration.html

I know that on several other computers (which also run the same gentoo kernel), I have a directory called /dev/usb which was created automatically somehow. On my main computer, which uses a usb printer, I have a /dev/usb/lp0 device.
I'm not worred about creating the specific device within /dev/usb, I'm wondering why I don't have *any* directory /dev/usb.
I could manually create the device with a mknod, but since I *never* had to create them before on other similar computers, I though the kernel would automatically create them on this computer too. On my other cmputers, they were "just there".
In order to create the device "/dev/usb/hiddev0" on a different computer (which had /dev/usb present already), I had to enable a specific item within the kernel. [Device Drivers -> USB Support -> USB Human Interface -> /dev/hiddev Raw Input support].
I suspect that I'm not enabling some kernel configuration that will create the /dev/usb devices.

to create something in /dev is not the kernel's job, but udev, hotplug etc.
