You have to create a partition on the free space, format the partition and then mount the partition in linux. You can arrange to automount the new partition on boot by properly editing /etc/fstab. How you go about doing all that depends on how your hard drives are laid out and your present partition structure. Do you have separate hard drives for your windows and linux instllations?

To give others a clue as to your present hard drive configuration post the output of this command:

$ su
<enter root password>
# /sbin/fdisk -l

That will list all your hard drives and partitions on your system.

I have done some mistake in freeing the space and i lost my OS, I have installed fedora 8 once again on my PC, with windows existing, i have partitioned the existing memory as

/boot 512 MB
swap 2048 MB (1GB RAM * 2)
/ 25 GB and
/vij 25 GB

i have done /vij for my secondary drive. Now when i start linux and enter as a user i cannot use /vij as it is under root control. how can i change the permissions and use it for my user login?

I have done it using

#chmod 777 /vij
then the permissions have been changed, but when i try to cut and paste some file into this drive, i am unable to do it. how can i get this drive to the user.

You need to run followin command as root to change ownership for normal user.

chown username /vij

Also need to run "chmod 755 /vij"
