how to convert stereo mp3 to mono wav?

I'm trying to convert an mp3 to a ringtone, and I need the intermediate file to be a mono wav file. I'm using this command with mplayer:

mplayer -ao pcm input.mp3 -ao pcm:file="output.wav"

and it converts nicely, but the wav is in stereo.

How do I make it mono?

Your help is appreciated,

- Beck

if not look into Lame
