How to convert Quicktime movie/WMV to Ogg Theora?

Hi, I've been playing around a lot with googles result for my searches, but nothing seems to work for me.

I'm on Ubuntu Dapper Drake 6.06 and just need to convert either a WMV or a MOV file to Ogg Theora, the easier the better.

Can anyone point me to a (working) Howto or explain it himself?

How new is your linux distribution? Will it be able to handle avidemux? I haven't installed or tested avidemux yet but it looks promising. Another possibility is cinelerra even though the binary that I tried out gave me a segment fault on my FC4.

I don't think that cinelerra can handle mov or wmv as input movies, and it crashed a lot when I last used it.

Avidemux is cool, but it cannot handle wmv or mov either.

There are possibilities to do this with mencoder, but I cannot find any working commandlines for me.

BTW: A windows program to do this would be okay too, as a last resort, I just need to convert this files soon ;)

If you are up to it, you can try installing and running windows under qemu and then use your windows conversion program there.

Regarding avidemux, did you try installing the win32 codecs rpm. xine 0.99 couldn't handle wmv either, that is until I installed the win32 codecs rpm, after which it handled wmv just fine.

I think you get my wrong, I do not need to play this files, and I allready have a pc with windows.
I just need to _convert_ this files to ogg-theora. I found a converter for windows who creates ogg-divx5 (whatever this is, no clue), but it has no sound, and I don't want divx, I want theora.

The simplest solution for Quicktime .mov is to get ffmpeg2theora. Just run that and conversion is done in a flash. If you .mov file is Quicktime-7-only though you may lose audio.
