In red hat, you have to install the xmms mp3 plugin separately I think. Have a look around www.rpm.org for it.

Looks like arts isn't installed. Look for that too on the same site.

Hello,

Suddenly there is a problem with sound in my RH 9. I could detect the sound card and play the 'test sound'. but when i try to execute a program which access the sound (openAL++ programs) it says,

open /dev/[sound/]dsp: Device or resource busy
Aborted

what is the problem?

Run top and see if there's anything that could still be accessing the dsp device. Try rebooting and see if it still occurs.

I didn't say top would display dsp devices. I said look through the output and see if there's a program running that might be using it.

What format (wav, mp3, ogg, etc) is the test sound in? Does OpenAL++ give this error immediately on start or when to tell it to play something? If it's the latter, what are you trying to play? Basically give me a run down of what works and what doesn't. Does sound work AT ALL? Is/are there any particular SOUND FORMATS that you can't play (but can play others)? Is/are there any particular PROGRAMS that you can't run (but can run others)? I've sort of gotten lost in what you managed to get working in the end.

Simple.. I am trying to test whether sound is working in the system and running the OpenAL++ programs. That is what I am doing now. Well, i have posted many times about simple problems because i am trying in more than one machine. So, please don't get confused that I am putting so many errors all together. They are the problems faced in different machines. Sorry, if I have irritated with such simple questions.

I am able to test the sound in RH 9. It's detecting the sound card and playing the wav, mp3 formats in xmms. In OpenAL++ i am trying to run a WAV sound format. I am testing with simple program where it plays the wav file. that's all. Also, I am getting the above error when i run any OpenAL++ programs.

thanks for the trouble.
