How to configure OpenAL to output to a different soundcard?

I have a onboard sound card and a usb headset, which basically has a build in sound card. I have managed to configure alsa to use it, and all alsa-using progs now work fine. ut2004, however, usus OpenAL and I have not been able to make it output to alsa; it crashes when I put (define device '(alsa)) in ~/.openalrc. So how do I make it output to my second sound card? Thanks.
