How to configure Firefox to download .iso files, not try to open them

I should probably post this over in the Firefox forums but the folks here are extremely responsive. And the issue is somewhat Linux related (I think).

I have Firefox 3.20 on Ubuntu 10.04. The profile was transferred from an XP machine going on two years ago. Recently I was doing some cleanup and changing add-ons etc. I copied my bookmarks, saved passwords and basic preferences to a new profile. I then deleted a couple of add-ons I no longer wanted etc. All seemed to be working well except...

If I try and download an .iso file the default action is to open it with WinRAR (which I have installed under wine). I can tell Firefox to save the file however, I cannot check the "[ ] Do this automatically for files like this from now on" option. I cannot find .iso listed under Preferences; Applications.

This may well be a self inflicted issue. Can anyone suggest a fix?

TIA,

Ken

try to upgrade your browser at least you should run 3.6.*..May be this can fix your problem..
Your problem is new....
for ISO's I would recommend
Quote:
kget/multiget/wget

Thanks rahulkya,

I really need to learn how to type and/or proofread. I am in fact running 3.6.20 which is current in the Ubuntu repos.

If I have a really LARGE file to download I use Internet Download Manager running in a Windows VM under VMWare. IDM really sucks (files from the Internet that is).

In fact it sucked me out of my prior ISP. I was using a point to point WiFi service as there was no DSL in my area. The fellow who ran the (small) ISP liked to tinker with his system (in production) and often screwed things up. But it was the only option over dialup. Then he added some sort of "fix all the problems of the Internet" box to his system. It was a proxy, cache, filter and who knows what else device he purchased from that fellow Al Gore - the one who invented the Internet Anyhow, I had some files queued up in IDM to download from EasyNews. He broke his bandwidth management and although I was subscribed to a 256 kb service I was actually pulling about 1.5 Mb and bringing down the T1 line from his office to the radio tower and everything else on the connection. We parted company. And then, after a highway project relocated the intersection of my road and the main highway by about 100', the phone company rebuilt their lines and behold I had DSL available!

Thanks jefro,

If you are referring to right clicking on the link to the .iso and "Save link as..." sometimes that works and sometimes the web site is not configured with a direct link to the file in question so I have gotten used to simply left clicking on the link and then allowing Firefox to determine if it needs follow the link to a download page or simply to download the file.

But it gets stranger... I just tried this on a clean Firefox install in a new, clean Ubuntu 10.04 virtual machine running under VMWare. I find that I can set the "[ ] Do this automatically for files like this from now on" option for a .torrent file but NOT for a .iso file. It has nothing to do with WinRAR/wine as they are not installed on the VM. The default handler for .iso is Archive Mounter. I can change this to Save file but not set the automatic option.
