Question How to compress video files to .avi or .rm in linux


how can i compress video files to .avi or .rm format in linux. please provide any links of software utility required.

no decent way to create rm files as it's a proprietry format. i use mencoder to make avi's. i also write acidrip myself which uses mencoder to do the encoding via a gui
