How to clone CentOS ?

Is it possible to clone a CentOS to another hard drive without shutting down the CentOS? Or is there a way I could clone the CentOS over LAN ?

The problem is that if the system is active, files are changing. Sometimes files depend on each other, but because the cloning occurs over a relatively long time, the files can be in an inconsistent state. If you are using LVM2, you can use the snapshot functionality to overcome this, and allow you to take a backup/clone while the system is running. If you are not using LVM2, the activity should be performed while the source drive is unmounted (if possible), or with the system booted from another drive (like a liveCD/DVD) in single user mode.

To clone over the network, you can use rsync. If the drive is bootable, you can use dd to extract the necessary boot sectors/LVM2 information and partition table info with:

dd if=/dev/sdX of=sdX.boot bs=512 count=63

You can then write that to the (unmounted) destination drive, prior to mounting it.
