How to clean the hard disk?

Hello everyone
I use a Fedora core 4 box, and I find that my free disk space is little, So I want to uninstall some of the software in my system. But after removing a lot packages(including all the kde packages, btw, I use gnome), I find the disk space keeps all the same! Why? Doesnt the system remove the files uninstalled? Please help me.
3x!

I didn't work with Fedora's package management, but when I use another distros like SuSE when I remove a package my disk free space increases. If you can't remove packages, another idea is to resize your linux partition.

If you remove something humungus like kde and related luggage, you should see a big difference!
I run the command: rpm -qa |sort >file.txt to get a good idea of what is installed. Then I use yum to remove things.
For example: yum remove *-devel-*
After a big install or delete, I run these commands:
updatedb
depmod -a
yum clean all

I reboot and run the e2fsck -f /dev/hdb2 at boot time or from a livecd.

I check the results with the command: df -h
