To have printing system (aka CUPS in Slackware 13.37) active do this:
Code:
chmod +x /etc/rc.d/rc.cups
/etc/rc.d/rc.cups start
Please note that at next boot CUPS will start automatically.

Then type:
Code:
localhost:631
in the address bar of your preferred browser and go to "Administration" to set up your printer.

Just to check if cups/printer is active
Code:
ls /var/run/cups/cups.sock |grep -c sock
returns "1" on active duty

Yeah, I think that you definitely want to be working with Cups, not lpd. When you're looking at "printing systems," Cups really did achieve its intended goal. (Behind the scenes, it is the printing subsystem of OS/X.)
