Question How to check host supports WakeOnLan?

Hello,

I have a MSI WindPC MS-7418 available currently running Debian 9, and would like to check whether it supports WakeOnLan so I can wake it up, and put it back to sleep remotely by just sending some trigger over the LAN (from a… Windows host, sorry).

I've never used WoL before: How can I check if that MSI host supports it, and how can I use it from a Windows host?

Thank you.

There might be a BIOS setting to enable WOL. To check to see of the adapter supports WOL run the command as root

ethtool interface (replace with the name of your interface adapter)

There are many WOL applications for Windows. You can even download one from the Microsoft store. I've never played with WOL using Windows so can not recommend one. A WOL program just sends what is known as a magic packet to a device using its MAC.

Thanks for the infos.

I just figured that WoL only works to… wake a computer up (what's in a name), but I really was looking for a way to put a Debian computer back to sleep remotely withouth having to log on throuth SSH and run a command such as "/usr/sbin/rtcwake -m standby -u -t 10"

I'll read up on how to automate sending a command through SSH.
