You need to log out and restart the X server for the changes to take effect.
Configuration was written to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, original configuration saved as /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup.
Distribution: RHEL/CentOS/SL 5 i386 and x86_64 pata for IDE in use

Ending your GUI session is not what the message means, it means get out of tX windows, the session and the GUI log on screen. When at the GUI logon screen press the three key combo of Ctrl+Alt+F1, log on as root and type;
telinit 3
telinit 5
Then go back and press the same three key combo and log out as root, press the three key combo of Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get back to the GUI screen. Or choose to restart the X server if the option is available, or simply reboot.
Hey all, I recently installed FC6 and when i try to go into the gui by typing startx, the screen looks like the resolution is way out of wack. it looks like there are 3 sets of mice and i can kind of see the gui, but it's all cut up into lines and when i move the mouse there are 3 mice moving. I would like to try to change the resolution but when i try to go to /etc/X11/xorg.conf it says permission denied when i'm logged in as root. how do i change the resolution if i can't get into the gui and can't change it through the prompt?
i just didn't want to have the same question a bunch of times in a forum in different threads. i thought it would make it less cluttered this way. sorry
What's happening is I have just installed FC6 on my ps3 and i'm using my hdtv as the monitor through an hdmi cable. I have tried going through the origional rca cables the ps3 came with but i have the same problem.
I found out that i can get into the xorg editor by going to
vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf and once in there it looks like i can change some settings, I tried to use the command line displayed above but i get the error:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/system-config-display/xconf.py", line 388, in ?
if xconfigpath and not output_file_specified:
NameError: name 'xconfigpath' is not defined
anyone know why this is telling me this? thanks again.
