How-to Backup RH9.0...Part II

Originally I asked about the best way to backup my RH9.0...I described the process I have now (I backup using different partitions on the same hd...of course if the hd fails then I quess I'm screwed) and several replies point out that I should backup my install to an alternate device (ie...tape or another HD)...thats very dueable but noone told me which program/process to use...would the cp -a /boot /root /dev.../mnt/HD and so forth work or should I use a designated program...??? Thanks for your time
