How the $%*#$*$# does DCGUI work?
 

Hello!
I have recently installed, 'configured', and run dcgui. Now, the only problem is that I have no idea what I am supposed to do, as the GUI is hardly intuitive (unlike other file sharers like limewire or kazaa). I have bulked up my shared files to pass the 5 GB minimum that all the hub servers seem to have, but searches don't produce any results.

Does any documentation for dcgui exist?

Hi. First thing you'll wanna do is find a decent hub. I prefer Asgard Curzed. However, this depends on what you are looking for. Second, hook up with alot of decent hubs, this will increase the amount of files you will find. Now bring up the search screen, and click the hubs tab in the search screen. Make sure you have selected "connected hubs" and then click back to the main screen and do your search. You can usually narrow it down a bit to produce more applicable items, but if you just wanna search for the sake of producing results, then don't narrow it down, or filter it.

I'm trying to make sense out of this thing myself. I couldn't find that Asgard Curzed hub you were talking about but I found a few others that were ok.

Got kicked off a few for "being a lamer and advertising"??? and for "trying to forge my dc++ tag"???? I really don't have a clue what's up.

I can answer this one (I hope), at least: of the many windows that appear in this application, there is one that appears at the bottom of the main window that shows both uploads and downloads on the same window.

Yeah, the transfer one right? But the state tab always says download. I have 3.5G of music, you would think that someone would want at least one song right? ;)

bulliver: Don't worry, some day, when you least expect it somewone WILL download a huge file, probably taking over your whole bandwidth... It happened to me last night... Someone was trying to download a 700Mb file through my 10k/s connection... Needless to say, I spent half the night clicking on "Close connection" :)

I think what is happening is that either :

a) you aren't connected to a network (which is what I am used to), but a collection of servers, each attached to a 'hub'. (I have no idea what this means! I think it means that The Man can't track you down in the event that logs are subpoenaed, but who knows?), You apparently have to join each hub individually., then do your search.
I haven't attempted this myself, yet. (I turned dcgui off after freaking out seeing what other people had open to the internet !!)

b) People are searching for porn these days, not music. (I think it has to do with the yearly cycle ;-)

I felt the same way. I went into the asgard hub and asked someone to download from me so I could make sure I was sharing. Went fine. No problem. I wouldn't worry about it too much, it simply may be that you don't have enough files to get onto the good servers where the trading really goes on. I just passed 20GB of shared files, and found all the good hubs! :) Asgard is great though, and I believe they only require 5? Maybe 10GB of shared files.

Anyway, yeah, that'd be your best way of finding out if someone can download from you. Go into a hub, and ask someone to try to download from you.

I used to also filter by keywords, like 5GB (back when I only had 7GB to share) and things like that. Then I'd sort (by clicking the tab above it) by users so I could get on the "heaviest" hub and get the most results in my searches.

Honestly though, the best thing I've found so far is to share alot of files, this gets you on higher hubs, and gets your more, higher quality files.

When I restarted dcgui again today, I proceeded to follow MasterC's instructions but have run into a bit of a problem: the first few hubs I tried to connect to rejected me, stating that I was being redirected because I was sharing 0 Kb of data. Yet, when I go to the transfer tab of the config window, the directories I have added there add up to approx. 9 Gb. What is going on? Is there somewhere else that I have to do to enable sharing?

What do you get when you click Info button in the transfer tab of the config window? If it is not a satisfying number you have to click on the button Rebuild in the same window (this may take some time depending on how much you share and how fast is your computer)

Folks:

How can you tell you're connected to a hub? I clicked on a bunch of different hubs, and each time another window opened that looked like a chat window and a little message said <DC-GUI connected> or something like that. But I do searches and I can't find anything. Is there something obvious that I'm not doing. I'm doing a passive search, btw.

I went through this manual but I didn't have a whole lot of luck...

To check out a hub, you should double click it, or right click on it and choose connect. If you want to see a user's share list, right click his nick name and choose Get file list (the default is chat).

I have a question... How BIG is dcgui when it's running? On my system it takes up between 32Mb and 50Mb of RAM. Is this normal?

There are two main tabs in that window: User and Chat. Are you looking at the right one?
